The program will award developer grants to teams that are building dapps, tooling, and infrastructure on the Internet Computer.
The development of the decentralized web is creating opportunities for innovation that previously didnât exist. To foster visionary initiatives in this space, the DFINITY Foundation is today launching the Internet Computer Developer Ecosystem Program, a resource that will help finance the building of dapps, tooling, and infrastructure on the Internet Computer, the worldâs first blockchain that runs at web speed and can scale without bound.
The Developer Ecosystem Program, totaling CHF 200 million, is waiting to be deployed to entrepreneurs and developer teams, supporting the growth of a new ecosystem of dapps and services on the open web. A key part of the program will include non-dilutive financing in the form of developer grants to teams building on the Internet Computer. This element of the program is now open, and is accepting grant applications at dfinity.org/grants.
These grants will operate separately from the Beacon Fund, a dedicated venture fund supporting entrepreneurs building the future of hyper-scale software and open internet services on the Internet Computer. Announced in September 2020, Beacon is a $14.5 million fund led by Polychain Capital and supported by Andreessen Horowitz and the DFINITY Foundation.
âThink from first principles about how you could enable a new type of behavior thatâs unprecedented,â says Polychain Capital co-founder Olaf Carlson-Wee. âThere are no limits to the potential of what could be built here.â
The Internet Computer empowers developers to design new applications and tooling to support the Internet Computer ecosystem without being hindered by proprietary infrastructure or the limitations of conventional blockchains. The networkâs recent Mercury Genesis launch marks its emergence as part of the public internet.
âThe Internet Computer redefines public blockchain as a platform that can now run smart contracts at web speed, that can serve web directly to users, that can increase its capacity with demand as needed, that is efficient, that governs itself, and that can provide better usability than those systems built on traditional technology,â says DFINITY founder and chief scientist Dominic Williams. âOur aim is to support the reimagination of all systems and services in new forms using smart contracts on an infinite public blockchain, and nothing else.â
The Internet Computer ecosystem is already producing dapps and services from a variety of entrepreneurs and developer teams. Recent projects include:
- ORIGYN, a pan-industry platform that, starting with the luxury watch industry, identifies and exposes counterfeits to stop brand dilution and value erosion from fake products.
- Fleek, a Web3 venture studio which provides decentralized hosting and storage options to developers. Starting with hosting websites, Fleek plans to rebuild the webâs core services as open internet services on the Internet Computer.
- DSCVR, an open version of the âfront page of the internet,â runs completely on-chain and launched within the first week of the Internet Computer network going live.
- OpenChat, an open, decentralized chat platform that gives users control over their data.
- Distrikt, a decentralized, professional social media network that puts open governance and community ownership in the hands of its users.
- WeAct.chat, a social activism platform thatâs designed to support communication, collaboration, and the crowdsourcing of work.
- Bunchd, a membership platform that enables creators to deploy their own full-featured subscription sites to serve large niche audiences.
- Canlista, a listing directory for Internet Computer software applications and services, providing tooling and a registry that enables developers to easily find and build on the canisters of other developers.
- Nuance, an open, decentralized blogging platform.
- DPunks, a marketplace for collectible NFTs on the Internet Computer, akin to the popular CryptoPunks platform on Ethereum.
- aedile, a decentralized project management tool.
- IC Drive, an open, decentralized file storage system.
As we enter this new era of the internet, the possibilities are endless. What follows could be the most consequential moment for todayâs developers and entrepreneurs, who have the chance to realize new business models and services by taking advantage of the efficiencies and abilities of the Internet Computer network.
If you have a brilliant idea and a talented team, the time is now. Apply at dfinity.org/grants.
