So, let’s be honest, who doesn’t want to be a god? The hours are good, there’s the smiting and finally… the pay is good! That’s right, with Olympus Game players can now earn moolah as they ascend to the heavens. Olympus Game is a new Play2Earn title backed by its own real world cryptocurrency. Based on Greek mythology, players take on the role of Greek deities as they attempt to climb the steps of Mount Olympus. To play the card-driven, tower defence game, players must first buy a deck with Olympus tokens, the game’s own cryptocurrency. As players climb through the ranks they can also earn power-ups, new characters, and even token rewards, but the developers are keen to point out the game isn't just about the income potential.
“The line between eSports and Play2Earn has been thinning for a while. Most competitive eSports have in-game currencies and many have real cash rewards, at least when it comes to the top tier. Olympus Game just takes that logical next step and cuts out the middlemen in a way, but our game is 100% focussed on playbility first and foremost. Sure, good players will be able to generate revenue from playing, but we’ll also just have a free-to-play arena where new players can learn the ropes.” Matthieu Feuillé, Olympus Game Founder
The game features cute graphics, promises fast-paced PVP action, and a true crypto-based economy. Unlike traditional video games, thanks to blockchain and NFT technology Olympus Games players will be able to own any unique items they win or collect. Some might help them in the game, while others might command higher value based on their aesthetics, rarity or status. Owning digital assets, like tradable items, in games isn’t new, indeed there was a bit of an online boom in so-called ‘digital sweatshops’ a few years back as entrepreneurs in third world countries realised they could get workers to farm rare items like swords and armour in games like World of Warcraft and sell these assets for real world cash. The truth is though, none of these items were truly unique and they could all be obtained by anyone with enough time on their hands. In Olympus Game, however, this is all set to change.
Rewards in the game come in the shape of chests. Players earn chests after every six wins and there’s a random element to their content. Importantly, each chest also comes with a ‘time lock’ which is designed to prevent anyone from advancing too quickly. These ‘cool downs’ can be overridden by investing some Olympus tokens too and inside there could be any number of rewards based on a random generator. Some chests will contain new cards, which might help a player to develop a new strategy, while other chests could have new characters each with their own unique skills. Of course chests can also contain other rewards like new tokens, emotes, skins and other in-game perks. At the end of the day, chests aside, the developers claim that the game will come down to strategy and a little luck.
Olympus Game will launch the project on the 30th April with their $OLYMP ICO, but you can follow them on Twitter, check out their white paper, or follow their road map if you want to know more.
