West Virginians in the armed services stationed abroad have started using a blockchain-based app for voting in this yearâs midterm elections.
West Virginians have begun using a blockchain-based mobile voting app for casting absentee ballots in the upcoming midterm elections, Slate reported September 25.
Citizens of West Virginia that currently live overseas have reportedly started using  a blockchain-enabled application for voting on Friday, September 21. The application â dubbed Voatz â will allow voters registered in 24 countries to cast absentee ballots via smartphone, mainly targeting military members stationed abroad.
The pilot project for remote voting, which was only available to a select group of voters, started in March and was successfully completed on May 8, the day of West Virginiaâs primary elections.
In early August, Mac Warner, the West Virginia Secretary of State and Voatz told CNN about the successful outcome of testing after âfour audits of various componentsâ of the platform.
Following the report, Warnerâs deputy chief of staff Michael L. Queen said that each separate West Virginia county will make the final decision about using the app for November elections, adding that voters will be still allowed to cast paper ballots if they choose.
The blockchain-powered remote voting initiative has drawn some criticism, namely over security concerns. Joseph Lorenzo Hall, the Chief Technologist at the Center for Democracy and Technology, claimed:
âMobile voting is a horrific idea. Itâs Internet voting on peopleâs horribly secured devices, over our horrible networks, to servers that are very difficult to secure without a physical paper record of the vote.â
Bradley Tusk of Tusk Montgomery Philanthropies â the company which funded the appâs development â encouraged blockchain deployment for voting. Tusk stated that remote voting can turn out more voters, and as a result, âdemocracy would work a lot better.â
