Ripple employees Stefan Thomas and Ben Sharafian were the catalysts behind creating a new endeavor called Coil. Coil is a service for micropayments, though it seems that they are now looking to make web content monetized. The twosome was interviewed in an Epicenter podcast, speaking on a business model from their system that could provide another option for the web industry.
The conversation began with Thomas, the main founder, discussing the various user experiences that they already provide. One such example he offered was the premium memberships that would require a subscription with a credit card on fill. Speaking on an ad-based business model, he said,
“Then there’s the ad-supported experience where it’s free and maybe I don’t even have to sign up but it’s like there are ads in my face all the time, I don’t really know if their privacy policy is gonna be very much in my favor, if it’s more in favor of the advertisers and that’s just kind of – take it or leave it.”
Thomas went on, saying the Coil offers something different to these customers and their experienced. They have the ability to monetize the internet in a way that does not require signing up and inputting any personal data online. Though he did not say directly, he implied that there would not be advertisements and popup windows overtaking the user’s internet browser. With all of the ways that web services pose a threat to users, Coil has options to make it better.
Elaborating, Thomas said,
“It’s [Coil] just an experience that’s designed to be as frictionless as possible. So, imagine, like for a file upload website today, they have like these fairly horrible ads with like the fake download button that you click and then it installs malware on your computer.”
Sharafian also had an opportunity to speak, though he only had a few notes about the way that Coil can change the perspective for users on internet browsing, focusing on privacy. He also commented that the monetization of the web will ensure that websites do not remember the user after they exit, maintaining anonymity.
