DPage gives you a way to create webpages on the decentralized internet. Decentralized means that your identity and the content that you create are owned by you. Nobody can modify, intercept or read your data without your permission. Also you can decide where and how you want to store your data. In this tutorial we will walk through the steps of creating and publishing a simple webpage using dpage.io
Step One: Signup and Login to dpage.io with Blockstack
When you visit https://dpage.io the first thing that you will notice is the big ‘Login with Blockstack’ button
DPage is built on top of Blockstack Platform. This platform provides a way to create a decentralized user profile. Start by pressing on ‘Login with Blockstack’ and you will see Blockstack login/signup screen.
In case your browser does not do anything after pressing the Login button, you need to install Blockstack Browser and then try to signup again. Blockstack Browser is the standard way to use Blockstack. However, it is not necessary if you are able to see this next screen.
If you never used Blockstack before click on ‘Create new ID’. This will initiate the process of decentralized identity creation. In the next step you will be able to pick your username in the blockstack namespace. You can read more about how names work in blockstack platform here.
If you succeed in picking a username that is not taken yet you will be able to continue the process. In the next steps you will be asked to create a password and enter your email.
It is absolutely important that you never forget your password because there is no centralized server that will be able to remind it for you! The password will be used to unlock your recovery key. The email address is necessary so that your recovery key would be sent to you via email in case you want to restore your profile on another browser. You can never loose your data as long as you know your recovery key and password. Click next after you enter your email.
Hooray! Your decentralized identity has been created. Now you are finally able to log in into dPage web page creator. An optional step here is to view your Secret Recovery Key. In case you did not get an email with your recovery key, you must click the link and copy the key in order not to lose your profile.
Now the last step that you need to take is to grant dPage app permissions to access your newly created profile.
If you logged in successfully you will see your username inside on the top right corner, next to Log out.
However sometimes the username registration does not go through and if that happened you will notice an error where username should be.
In this scenario try deleting browser cache and repeating the signup steps again. Also you might consider installing Blockstack Browser and repeating the process. Even if you succeed the signup without Blockstack Browser you should install it because it will give you a way to manage the storage of your decentralized data.
Step Two: Create your web page
Now that the hard part is over you can start creating your web page that will be stored on the decentralized net 🙂. Start by pressing on the big ‘Create new page’ button.
This will bring you to the page editor screen where you can start writing down your thoughts.
In the editor you can perform these basic operations:
- Enter text content
- Invoke the text style toolbar by selecting text with your cursor. The style toolbar will allow you to change text formatting and add hyperlinks.
- Embed external web content by pressing on the plus (+) icon that appears next to each empty paragraph. Just enter the link into the form that appears after pressing on the plus.
Play around with the editor until you are happy with your creation.
Step Three: Publish your page and share the link with the world
When you feel ready to publish take a look at the top right corner of the page editor.
The grey URL is a preview of how your link will look like after you publish the page. However, the page is only available via this link when you press the ‘Make public’ button. After you press the publish button the URL will become blue. Now you can copy the link and share it with your friends.
Don’t forget to share the URL with us as well by mentioning @dpageio on Twitter! And make sure to follow @dpageio for more updates 🙂
