Tron has been having plenty of success within their own platform lately, but a former executive for BitTorrent does not believe that they are capable of more. In an interview with BreakerMag, a news website for blockchain technology, former chief strategy officer Simon Morris said that he believes that the transaction volume at BitTorrent that would be necessary for tokenization is beyond the power of Tron.
Morris continued about his time with BitTorrent, saying that his team had figured out that they could speed up the network by up to 40%. However, to do so, they would need to bring in automated auctions and a token so that download queues would be prioritized. Still, with everything that Morris believes is necessary to make this possible, there is “no way” that the blockchain from Tron could fulfill that tall order.
Just to get the ball rolling, Morris says that the blockchain needs the capacity for hundreds of transactions with every second. He added,
“You hear all the bulls**t out there, oh, this does 10,000 transactions a second. It’s all crap. We were going to melt TRON. Literally destroy it.”
Morris also says that there is no real reason that any claims made about BTT, the Tron-based token for BitTorrent, should hold any weight. Morris explains, “It’s basically a marketing machine layered on a very thin veneer of technology.”
Justin Sun, the CEO and founder of Tron, “doesn’t have a technical bone in his body,” as Morris puts it, clearly indicating his lack of faith in the entrepreneur. Continuing, he noted,
“But the approach that bothered me was, the very sort of Trumpian approach — if you get caught in a lie, the answer is you double down on the lie. [It was] the endless doubling down on lies that made me think it wasn’t going to be a fit.”
The departure of Morris from BitTorrent happened in mid-summer 2018, following his decision to avoid harvesting any trusting relationship with the executives in charge at Tron. Morris accused Sun of plagiarizing both the code and whitepaper that he used for Tron, to which Sun replied, “We have come to a consensus that this did not happen. And we have moved on.”
Morris holds the belief that a central server will be used by Tron for the management of BitTorrent transactions, adding that Tron will pretend that it was centered on their own system. BitTorrent should still increase efficiency, but the system they use cannot use Tron to have the success they hope for.
A spokesperson for Tron commented on this situation to CoinTelegraph, saying, “Morris appears to have little insight into BitTorrent operational plans since his departure.” The individual continued, saying, “Actions and execution will prove louder than the words of a disgruntled former employee.”
Despite having left BitTorrent six months ago, it seems that Morris’s work with other blockchain projects has only stoked the existing fire that is brewing inside him about the technical claims that Tron makes. He said,
“All the nonsense about, oh, it’s the best blockchain ever, it’s so much better than Ethereum. It’s not: it’s a fork of Ethereum J. They didn’t even bother to apply the security updates subsequently.”
With all of the negative comments, Morris still hasn’t lost faith in BitTorrent. In fact, he points out something significant, saying
“In spite of its incredibly disruptive influence on the media industry and the flood of illegal activity that it seems to have enabled, BitTorrent has proven to be unbelievably robust.”
