Australian comedian Jim Jefferies revealed he bought one Bitcoin for roughly $10K on the Robinhood trading app for a laugh.
Australian comedian Jim Jefferies has amassed a larger stack of Bitcoin than billionaire Elon Musk.
In a June 30 episode of Jefferiesâ podcast I Donât Know About That, the comedian revealed to âInvest Divaâ Kiana Danial that he was slightly more informed about cryptocurrency than his comedy team apparently knew â his podcast staff typically select topics the comedian has little or no knowledge of.
âI have one Bitcoin,â Jefferies said, âI bought it as a bit of a laugh just on the Robinhood app just to see what this crypto is all about.âÂ
The comedian said he currently owns $9,612 âworth of a Bitcoinâ but Danial determined Jefferies hadnât yet transferred his token to a wallet â and of course, ânot your keys, not your Bitcoin.â
The purchase of 1 BTC makes him richer in Bitcoin terms than tech billionaire Elon Musk, who confirmed in May that his Bitcoin holdings were still at a measly 0.25 BTC â $2,347 at the time of writing.
Jefferiesâ net worth is estimated close to $9 million, meaning his crypto investment makes up just 0.1% of his assets â a little less than billionaire Paul Tudor Jonesâ 1%.
Hilarious grasp of crypto
As the podcast is intended to be both educational and entertaining, Jefferies listened to Danial explain some basic crypto terms and history.Â
When the subject of Satoshi Nakamoto came up, the comedian quickly responded:
âEveryone knows who he is â two Michelin stars, best tuna in town.â
Cold storage was another comedic detour:
âIâm going to buy some Bitcoins, and Iâm gonna put my wallet in the fridge.â
Critical of âfinance expertâ
Comments on Jefferiesâ knowledge were mixed, but many members of Crypto Twitter were critical of Danialâs explanation of blockchain and cryptocurrency.Â
âThatâs what you need: someone who doesnât understand a subject to a bunch of people who have never heard of it,â said Twitter user Westy447, âLike a cat trying to explain cycling to fish.â
Podcaster Marty Bent even offered to be a replacement for Danial after another user brought her performance to his attention: âThe so-called expert they had on was a total disaster. I would love Jim Jefferies to come on your show, so he can learn about Bitcoin the right way.â
Jefferies is the second major comedian to express an interest in cryptocurrency over a podcast in a week. Cointelegraph reported on July 2 that Anthony Pompliano had successfully convinced comedian Bill Burr to invest in Bitcoin.
