The digital yuan is growing in status and achieving new milestones. In a recent scenario, a citizen of China has used the developing Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC) token to settle a fine. This represents one of the outstanding applications of the token in the mainstream.
According to reports, an offender in a motor vehicle traffic accident dispute case was behind this implementation. The offender, identified with his surname, Wei, was handed a fine of about $105 in Lucheng, a city in the district of Wenzhou, in Zhejiang province.
Despite other available payment options, the offender decided to offset the fine using digital yuan. For the transaction made, Wei received an invoice, establishing this event as another ‘first’ in the history of the digital yuan.
Wei’s expression after making the payment supports one of the cardinal points of the digital yuan functionality. He was quoted as saying that the payment was “very convenient”. According to him, he just had to click on his phone and it was done.
The digital yuan appears to be gaining increased adoption, especially among organs of the state. From their actions, it seemed that the court officials were very willing to see Wei opt for the digital yuan payment option. They helped him to install a digital yuan application operated by the state on his smartphone. They also guided him through the steps involved in processing the payment. The entire process was completed in just a couple of minutes.
In the wake of this event, Liu Wan Cheng, head of the Lucheng District People’s Court reemphasized that the options have been made open for anyone who wishes to make payment of fines. According to him, any cash or bank transfers have been acceptable methods of making such payments. However, the addition of digital yuan to the options will help the court to achieve its goal of becoming a “globalized digital court” quicker.
He said;
The addition of the digital yuan as a payment option will not replace other payment methods options. On the contrary, it will provide people with more choice.
One of the advantages that were pointed out by Liu is the fact that the implementation of the digital yuan as one of the payment options enables a faster method for fines settlement. He noted that payments made using this method reach the court’s account immediately and safely. The case-number matches are also automatic, and payment certificates are issued immediately. This is a method that he also notes to have the potential of providing efficiency and boosting the court’s transparency.
The Lucheng District People’s Court is already planning for its next step in the adoption and implementation of the digital yuan. According to reports, it has stated that it will cooperate with relevant government departments towards the expansion of the digital yuan in litigation fee payments. It is working towards providing court payments via the digital yuan. This will include cases where damages or refunds are awarded by the court.
Other advantages that the court noted that the system provides are in helping to improve the public’s litigation experience, and also help to boost judicial credibility and public access to the legal system.
China’s digital yuan project remains the leader among all order CBDC projects across the globe. Its pilot testing has been executed successfully in several cities within the country. It has also been tested during major events including the Winter Olympics, with remarkable results.
With the implementation by the Lucheng District People’s Court, another milestone has been achieved, setting a new standard in the mainstream implementation of the innovation. More organizations and establishments may soon follow the steps of the Lucheng District People’s Court. Indeed, the court’s plan to expand this use case across relevant organizations provides an ideal avenue for more mainstream implementation.
China has made its goals clear in terms of the digital yuan project. It has also followed up with development and implementation. As it stands, it may be only a matter of time until we see full implementation of the payment system across the board, especially within China’s financial system.
