Brave, an open source web browser by Mozillaās co-founder that claims to block ads and trackers, in addition to facilitating cryptocurrency-based micro-transactions between content consumers and producers, has announced development plans for its upcoming 1.0 release. The new release will transition to being based on Chromium ā making it compatible with all of Google Chromeās extensions and features.

New Chrome-Based Brave Browser Expected Later This Year
Brave has published a document revealing that it has been developing a new browser ābased on Chromium [ā¦] which also uses Chromiumās native user interface instead of [its] current HTML and Javascript UIā in recent months. The ārewriteā has been made āavailable for developers as open source.ā
The new release will āhave support for nearly all [Google] Chrome features and extension APIs,ā unlike the current Brave browser. Despite supporting chromeās extensions, Brave claims that the new browser will not āinclud[e] any code that phones home to Google, or to the Chrome Web Store.ā The document also notes that āBrave for Android already uses Chromium fully, [ā¦] without the code for Google accounts, sync, or other Google-specific surveillance risks.ā
The update states that the Brave 1.0 āis coming later this year,ā however no estimate is given as to a specific launch date.
More Updates Expected From Brave
The document states that the open source version made available to developers āis not yet ready to be released as an upgradeā to Braveās current āMuon-basedā browser, adding that āCritical features such as Brave Payments, Tor private tabs, and sync still need to be added based on the Muon implementations.ā
The company is also working on updating itās iOS browser, stating that it is ānow in the midst of movingā from UI Web View āto WK Web View [-] to benefit from Appleās newer engine and preferred embedding solution.ā
Lastly, Brave users will āsoonā be given to option āsee opt-in, private [ā¦] ads,ā for which they will be distributed a ā70% revenue shareā on advertising earnings in the form of Braveās cryptocurrency, Basic Attention Token (BAT).
