An Alarming Wave of Bitcoin Scams Hits Pittsburgh

The first reported case involved a 70-year-old woman who was led to believe her computer had been hacked. In an elaborate ruse, the scammers, posing as Apple support staff and a PNC fraud specialist, convinced her to withdraw $22,000 and purchase Bitcoin at a local convenience store. This transaction effectively transferred her funds to the fraudsters.

Similarly, a 72-year-old woman received a fraudulent alert on her iPad, prompting her to contact what she believed was Apple’s customer service. This interaction culminated in her withdrawing $7,000 and buying Bitcoin under the guise of resolving an alleged account hack linked to child pornography. These instances are part of a worrying trend in Pittsburgh and its surrounding areas.

The Challenge of Recovering Stolen Funds in Cryptocurrency Scams

“They obviously preyed on people’s fears, fear that they owe money, fear that their computer has been hacked,” stated Cara Cruz, Public Information Officer for the Pittsburgh Bureau of Public Safety. Unfortunately, the method of using Bitcoin makes it very difficult to recover the funds once they are gone.

However, there is a glimmer of hope in these grim scenarios. In a recent case handled by the North Huntingdon Police Department, officers were able to recover a significant portion of $50,000 scammed from a victim through a Bitcoin ATM. Detective Sergeant Mark Hamilton detailed the complex process of freezing accounts and executing search and seizure warrants across international borders to recover about $41,000 of the stolen funds.
