Middle School Principals In China Caught Spending Time Crypto Mining At Work, Stealing The School’s Resources
In a recent report from HK01, it seems that one Chinese school has not been using their computers for the good of the students lately. The report exposes two principals from Puman Middle School in Hunan, and they decided that their Ethereum mining efforts simply could not wait until they finished the school day. Instead, they were caught using the power supply at the school for their mining efforts over the course of several months.
The first tip-off that something was amiss was based on the slow performance of the school’s IT network, even though the electricity use had skyrocketed since July. The general manager for the school did not suspect anything at first, believing that the high usage had to do with the air conditioners that they had to use. Once the matter was inspected further, both principal Lei Hua and vice principal Wang Zhipeng had brought in nine computers, estimated to be worth $7,000 in value, dedicated to mining Ethereum cryptocurrency. According to TheNextWeb, these computers were located in a classroom that was thought to be vacant.
Based on the report on HK01, which was also reviewed on TheNextWeb, the principal did not start the mining process at the school. Instead, he started at home, but the electricity costs proved to be too much to handle in his personal budget. As he moved his project to the school, he stole the power from there instead, amounting to a theft of approximately $2,163. Though the vice principal only received a warning, TheNextWeb reports that he was fired. HK01 only notes that he is no longer at his position, so it is unclear if he is still employed by the school district.
