Ethereum Classic (ETC) Cooperative was originally formed in April 2017 as a non-profit organization. The purpose of the ETH Cooperative was to “financially support the growth and development of the Ethereum Classic protocol.”
In a recent announcement, the company stated that they have hired a new executive director, Bob Summerwill. Summerwill previously worked as an Ethereum core developer. ETC Cooperative enthusiastically announced their new addition on their official Twitter account.
Welcome @BobSummerwill to the ETC Cooperative!
From Bob himself: "I would like the ETC community to be seen as it actually is, a strongly principled group of people who develop useful technology"

Even though Summerwill’s history is as a developer, and also as a lead architect for ConsenSys, he does not have a particular preference for any singular cryptocurrency. In an interview with CoinDesk, he said,
“Something I’ve been talking about a lot through 2018 is this call to an end for tribalism. If you look at the whole of blockchain, it’s still a tiny thing compared to existing centralized technology bases, but you’ve got so much factionalism within blockchain where we’re really not being as effective as we could be.”
Optimally, Summerwill’s time as executive director would be spent by “helping to get constructive conversation happening within the Ethereum classic space and being able to communicate that plan and roadmap.”
To him, ETC has not fully recovered from the reputation that they have held since it launched in 2016 after the DAO collapsed.
Speaking on this unfortunate stance by the public, Summerwill said,
“The external perception has really been, ‘Well, here’s a group of zealot-y rebels who parted company with the rest of the Ethereum community and are just sore, sick and grumbling in the corner.’ The reality is there is interesting technical work happening on the classic side which I see as being additive to what’s happening in the rest of the ecosystem.”
Even with the attacks that have been happening on the Ethereum network lately, he believes that the response from the community is accurate, even when it comes to Anthony Lusardi’s suggestion to increase the wait times for confirmation. He said,
“Your [ETC] funds are as safe as your private keys are and really the answer is just waiting longer for the confirmations. The finality on the proof of work chains is statistical finality. It’s not absolute finality … So, I think it’s exchanges that are the entities that are really a need of looking at their practices.”
Summerwill remains realistic of the reactions ahead of him, expecting that there will be some kind of dissatisfaction to his filling of the executive director position.
That has not changed his hope that the community will eliminate the things that divide it, which he demonstrates with an open-door policy. Explaining how he will address the executive director responsibilities, he said,
“I spent a lot of 2018 bridge-building, really trying to pass out the message that we are all brothers and sisters in arms. What I’m really aiming to do in this role is to carry that forward in a very practical sense … I’m very excited to step into this role.”
