United States-based cryptocurrency exchange Kraken is embracing traditional forex trading, going live with nine new fiat currency pairs as of today, March 12.
From 14.30 UTC, users worldwide â notably excluding United States residents â will be able to use the Kraken platform to directly trade between euros, U.S. dollars, Canadian dollars, Japanese yen, pound sterling and Swiss francs.Â
The exact FX pairs are as follows: EUR/CAD, USD/CAD, USD/JPY, EUR/CHF, USD/CHF, EUR/USD, EUR/GBP, EUR/JPY, GBP/USD.
Spearheading a new move for the industry?
Kraken appears to be the first major crypto exchange to make an entry into the forex market.Â
Unlike its trading service for cryptocurrencies, Kraken is not offering margin trading on its forex offering at launch. It is, however, setting what it claims are âindustry-low order minimums,â meaning that traders are only required to trade 10 units of base currency for each transaction.Â
Prices will be shown at five decimal points, except for JPY-pairs, which will be displayed at 3 points.
The exchange has presented its move to provide forex services as something that will enable its clients to be âmore agile and sophisticatedâ in their trading strategies.Â
Spring 2020 developments
In recent days, Kraken has indicated its plans to expand services to the Indian market, following a recent ruling in the countryâs Supreme Court to overturn existing restrictions on banking services to crypto firms.
Also this month, the exchange became mired in a controversy involving the United Kingdomâs markets watchdog, the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA).Â
The body published a caution against the exchange on its cite, telling the public to be âespecially wary of dealing with this unauthorized firm,â but was prompted to swiftly remove the warning after it transpired that the FCAâs tip-off had been connected with scammers falsely claiming to be operating under the Kraken brand, not the exchange itself.
