Program has awarded over US$1.5m since 2019
BitMEX, one of the worldâs leading crypto derivatives platforms, is delighted to announce the award of two new Open Source Developer grants to Rene Pickhardt and Chris Coverdale.
This will help fund their contribution to the lightning network and implementation of the Stratum V2 Bitcoin mining pool protocol, respectively. BitMEX has extended an eight-month grant of US$33,333 of committed funding to each of them, which will last through the end of the 2021 programmeâs term (May 2022). The Open Source Developer Grant Programme, which is among the first of its kind globally, has awarded 10 grantees more than US$1.5m in funding since 2019.Â
BitMEX greatly benefits from the work of dedicated open source developers and believes in helping to sustain their work.Â
Reneâs work focuses on improving the reliability of the payment process and minimum cost flow solvers for optimal payment flows. Chris is working on building an implementation of the Stratum V2 Bitcoin mining pool protocol with more efficient data transfer.
Alexander Höptner, CEO of BitMEX, said: âRene and Chris bring the number of developers we have supported through our Open Source Bitcoin Developer Grant Programme to 10 since we began two years ago, with grants totalling US$1,500,000. It is a clear testament to BitMEXâs long term commitment to Bitcoin and open source technology. Support for Bitcoin developers from cryptocurrency exchanges is something BitMEX pioneered and now our programme is larger and more comprehensive than any other exchange. We are delighted to welcome Rene and Chris to the program and will continue to support Bitcoin development for years to comeâ.
With the two new grantees, BitMEX currently supports six open source Bitcoin developers with no-strings-attached grants:
- Bitcoin Core maintainer Michael Ford who has been with BitMEX for three years;
- Gleb Naumenko who joined the program in June 2020;
- Utreexo developer Calvin Kim, who joined the program in August 2020; and
- Bitcoin Core developer Sjors Provoost, who joined the program in August 2021
The application process for the 2021 Grant Program has now closed. Details of the 2022 Grant Program will be announced in due course.Â
