You get an Ethereum address via ENS (Ethereum Name Service), an open, distributed decentralized application based on Ethereum. It features a naming system where users can convert their wallet addresses, which are long and alphanumeric, into readable format.
ENSā basic functionality is to map readable names to token addresses, metadata, and content hashes. You can set up an Ethereum address and use it to receive any crypto: not just ether, but also Bitcoin, Polkadot, Polygon (MATIC), and more.
This article clarifies how to register a new name through the ENS manager app, set up various addresses, and receive tokens in a single place.
First Steps
The process begins at the ENS page, where you need to connect with the ENS app. Any mobile wallet or browser extension supported by ENS can be used. Choose your wallet; one option is MetaMask. After connecting the MetaMask wallet, the Ethereum Name Service landing page will appear.
Use the wallet address you want to set with your name. Itās also possible to transfer ownership to another wallet. Most importantly, you need a sufficient supply of ether to cover the gas fees.
Now, search for your name of choice. Add .eth at the end. An ENS domain name checker will show you if this name has already been registered. The app will ask you for additional details if the name is available.
Use ā-ā and ā+ā to adjust the registration period. When youāve set this period, press Request To Register; this will trigger a wallet transaction, which you need to confirm. A green bar indicating the progress will appear.
After this, there is a brief wait period to check if someone else might be trying to register with your name. Confirm the process to create your .eth domain, which you can see on the app.
Address-name Translation
The reverse record function performs this process. When you connect with the supporting app, you will see your wallet address changing to one with .eth at the end after setting up the reverse record.
One possible app that does this is Uniswap, which also issues the UNI cryptocurrency, one of the biggest by market cap. When you connect your wallet to the app, the wallet address will be displayed. To set the details, click on Reverse Record under ENS manager.
Save your domain after choosing it from the drop-down menu. Now, the record will reflect the domain name. Go to Uniswap again and refresh to make sure this is the case.
Editing and Adding Records
The button Add/Edit record fulfills this function. It is in the Records field. Your Ethereum wallet address will appear automatically. Copy and paste it where applicable if you have Bitcoin, Litecoin, or Dogecoin. Click on Add for tokens in addition to these three. Choose the type and enter the values.
Keep in mind any details you add, including token addresses, incur a gas fee. The app makes it possible to add several details and confirm them at the same time. This is more reasonable than adding them one by one because each comes with a gas charge.
Conclusion
ENS is one of the most popular decentralized applications out there. It maps lengthy ETH wallet addresses to simple and easy names that humans can read.
The benefits of readability go beyond convenience. It eliminates the risk of misspelling a wallet address, leading to the loss of funds. You provide a single address to which multiple tokens can be transferred. This is efficient, hassle-free, and appealing.
There is no need to log in to the wallet or exchange, look for the token, and wait to receive the deposit address for it. Some users have complained that the page is slightly blurred, but this hasnāt been confirmed universally.
