The metaverse has faced significant negative criticism by the masses, but might just be the place to solve the world's global culture crisis and help advance our society.
What if you could visit the Taj Mahal, Macchu Picchu or the Eiffel Tower, all from the comfort of your house? What if the experience felt real and physical, to the point of being educational and providing lasting memories? What if we had all of history recorded in the blockchain, from the first transaction of data to the first book written to the way Rome looked hundreds of years ago?
These experiences are highly sought after and for a good reason. These places and plenty more represent culture, history and tradition, often drawing millions of tourists annually. In 2022, physically getting to these locations may be impossible due to restrictions and regardless, are difficult to afford for many. The inaccessibility of culture and education will hinder future societies and limit knowledge.
The Culture Crisis
Around the world, maintaining traditional customs is getting more and more difficult. People from all different backgrounds are fighting to keep their cultures alive, and struggling to do so. There are several contributing factors to this, the largest being the lack of education on foreign traditions.
The biggest reason cultures are fading into history is due to inaccessible education. The metaverse, and Web3, will decentralize and bring together many educational opportunities. From historical sites and buildings to books and audio from famous professors' lectures, access to education will become much simpler.
While the metaverse may allow us to expand culture-based educational opportunities, it also allows location independence. Without education being tied to a physical location anymore, there will be very few limitations for people all around the world to receive an education. It will no longer matter whether you are in a third-world country with internet access or right next to Harvard University.
The Web3 movement revolves around the theme of decentralization and community. Making educational, historical and cultural events and content easily accessible anywhere around the world is one of the first problems being tackled by Web3 entrepreneurs.
Opportunities Brought by Web3
Preserving culture on-chain is the easiest and safest way to guarantee access in the future, whether accessed by a loved one in half a decade or by future world leaders ten generations from now. Securing artifacts and ideas on-chain offers plenty of opportunities for improvement on the way things are currently done, as well as exciting and attainable possibilities down the road.
The majority of our present-day knowledge is based on history and things we have learned from in the past. Not only is preserving history important culturally, but also for the greater good of society. Recording data on-chain is the most efficient way to maintain it over a long period of time, and historical data of all kinds has proved absolutely essential to figuring out past events.
The metaverse may seem like a far-off, crazy idea to some, but the average person already spends more than 40 hours a week on average in front of a screen. If screentime, versus physical interaction, could be replaced by a better experience in the metaverse, why are so many people uninterested and dismissive? Being vital for a thriving future civilization, NFTs, the metaverse and on-chain history will be a major factor in our society moving forward in the future.
