AI-powered tools for mass customization and creation of digital assets enable creative ownership for Web3 contributors
By Renz Chong
Web3 is all about decentralization, powered by blockchain technology, which lets you prove immutable ownership over a digital asset. However, decentralized ownership extends beyond just having the rights to own, use, or sell assets; it also gives you creative control. As the space develops, there is a continuous emergence of more ways to create and customize your assets.Â
In blockchain gaming for example, users are now given the power to participate and “own” beyond just playable characters - they are now able to customize traits of a particular game character, tailor wearables to reflect their style, and even contribute ideas for game lore. This new paradigm ushers in a generation of creators, allowing them to express their unique styles and identities across different digital worlds within the metaverse.
Identity and Customization
We’ve all seen customized digital assets hold value in Web2 context, as they enable users to express their individuality and establish their unique identity in the different digital environments (usually games or virtual worlds) available. Customized in-game items, for example, such as unique skins and weapons often hold greater value than generic, platform-provided items.Â
These exclusive items not only enhance the experience, but have also driven user engagement and built strong communities for these platforms. Another example is the market for custom avatars and accessories in virtual worlds like Second Life. Users can create and sell unique clothing, hairstyles, and other virtual goods, often commanding higher prices than standard items offered by the platform.Â
The same principles of identity and customization can be transferred to Web3, where emerging digital spaces provide new opportunities for creators. Web2 saw the concentration of power and control in the hands of a few dominant platforms, which limited access to resources and tools as well as formats for many creators. This prevented a diverse range of individuals from participating in the creator economy and realizing their fullest creative potential, limiting the content innovation in these spaces.Â
The Democratization of the Creative Process
The decentralization of creative ownership of digital assets calls for the democratization of the creative process. While certain spaces and projects have created mechanics and tools that allow for customization, there are still a lot of technical user gaps for 3D asset generation: the wearables, clothing, shoes, bags, accessories, furnishing, and other assets that we attach our identities to within gaming and other virtual worlds.Â
Currently, the only tools widely available and used require technical skill or an abundance of time and effort to learn, gatekeeping 3D asset generation from many. This is true for gaming and other sectors of Web3 such as fashion and social virtual worlds.Â
I believe, however, that we are on the cusp of true creative decentralization. Artificial intelligence (AI) offers a solution to the challenges faced by creators aiming to streamline the complex process of creation. We’ve seen AI make waves with different applications bearing the promise of simplifying the complicated, thus making the technical more creative. These developments perfectly coincide with the metaverse ushering in a new wave of Web3 creators, enabling everyone to be their own metaverse architect, designer, stylist, and everything else.Â
Building Community
The prevailing expression of creativity is important, especially in a communal context. It allows a deeper sense of pride and belonging, making participants more likely to be committed, active members of their community. This personal connection fosters deeper engagement and loyalty that can help strengthen and sustain the community over time. It's often said that a project is only as valuable as its community, and there's a lot of truth to that. Web3 continues to prove that we are in an era of a more collaborative internet—a melting pot of knowledge, ideas, and creativity—an internet of our creation.Â
