Cobo Tablet, a solution to secure your cryptocurrency seeds

Cobo Tablet, a crypto seed storage solution you can trust

Cryptocurrency enthusiasts, HODLers and investors are using digital wallets to store their assets, which essentially are their private keys. These keys are usually backed up through mnemonic phrases, called recovery seeds. So securing these seeds is highly recommended if you want to be sure you will always have access to your ‘coins’. And that’s what the Cobo Tablet has to offer.

All major crypto wallets use a seed (a 12- to 24-word recovery phrase) to backup our private keys. If our phone or hardware wallet is destroyed, we need this seed to recover our funds. So it is the ultimate key to accessing our assets.  Storing it can be a headache as anyone with that phrase can unlock our assets and steal them. You'll probably agree that there is never too much protection for that.

The Cobo Tablet promises to be the optimum solution for securing our recovery seeds. That’s because it has been designed with safety and security in mind. According to the manufacturer, the tablet is indestructible. Built with grade 304-grade steel, resistant to various types of corrosion, this little sliding tablet is fireproof up to 2650 degrees Fahrenheit. Thus, we can be sure that whatever happens our recovery seeds will be safe within.

How it works

The tablet consists of 6 steel layers, screwed together in two plates of three layers each. It’s double-sided and supports up to 96 letter tiles, allowing for 12, 18 and 24 word seed phrases. The box contains also a screwdriver, spare screws, and 252 small letter tiles including a few blanks.

The package of Combo tablet

Securing our crypto seeds in Cobo Tablet is a simple process. First, slide open the tablet. Then, select one of the two plates and unscrew its three corners with the screwdriver. The cover layer can now be opened revealing the empty slots. This is where we put the letter tiles forming our seeds.

So, pick the letter tiles which form the words in your recovery phrase and put these into the metal slots. But wait! Each slot can hold up to 4 letters. That’s because, the Combo Tablet follows the BIP39 protocol being used by most hardware and software wallets to generate the mnemonic phrases. That protocol consists of a list of 2048 English words that have been carefully selected so we can identify each one from its first 4 letters. This means we need to insert to each slot in the Cobo Tablet only the first 4 letters from each word of our recovery seed. Note: If a recovery seed has three-letter words, we simply insert the backside of a letter tile to act as a placeholder.

Moreover, as we would expected from a gadget like this, the letter tiles cannot be compromised. Each letter is etched in steel with an intense laser engraving process. This ensures our phrase words are permanently preserved.

Each plate of the Cobo Tablet can support up to 24 words, but you can also use 12 or 18 depending on the length of your recovery seed. Finally, close the cover layer and fasten the three screws again. Slide the plate back in and you’ re done. To firmly secure the tablet, you can lock it up with a padlock in the keyhole.

The design and manufacturing quality of the Cobo Tablet is impressive. It makes you feel reassured that your recover keys will stay safe forever. We liked its simplicity and ease of use. It is lightweight, so you can actually hold it in your hand and have it with you wherever you go protecting your cryptocurrency. And it's affordable, too, as it has a tag of $39.00. In short, it is the prefect backup tool for our digital assets.
